This 1938-D Buffalo Nickel is in Mint State 68 condition. The typical coin at this grade has a beautiful strike with full, original luster and no more than four light, scattered contact marks or flaws. This particular coin has a subtle champagne-gold toning around its periphery with a light, silvery core.

Buffalo Nickels were introduced in 1913 during the administration of President William Howard Taft. Designed by James Earle Fraser, a native of the American Midwest, the images on the coin evoke the wild, untamed spirit of the American West and the rugged indigenous cultures that inhabited the region for centuries. These coins, introduced prior to World War I, would remain in production through the Roaring 20s and into the depths of the Great Depression.

The obverse of the 1938-D Buffalo Nickel features Fraser’s iconic bust of an indigenous tribal figure. This tribal figure is depicted in right-profile relief and has braided hair with two feathers woven into his braid. Fraser used three different indigenous leaders of the era for inspiration for his composite portrait.

On the reverse of 1938-D Buffalo Nickel Coins, you’ll find the image of an American bison. This massive creature is depicted in left-profile relief, standing atop a mound of dirt and earth. Black Diamond, a bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City, is said to have been the inspiration for this design.
