Description

2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle Coin (Capsule Only)

America’s greatest gold coin design is arguably the 1907 vision of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Commissioned directly by President Theodore Roosevelt, Saint-Gaudens was actually charged with creating several designs for the US Mint starting in 1905, though his most famous designs would be the 1907 Eagle and 1907 Double Eagle images of Liberty. In 2009, the US Mint honored that legacy with a stunning high-relief gold version of the original design. Right now, 2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to purchase online.

Each 2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle Coin available here comes only with a protective plastic capsule for delivery. These 24-karat gold specimens have a stunning high-relief strike. The malleable 24-karat gold enabled the mint to better strike the 3D relief of Liberty and the bald eagle for this impressive release.

In 1907, Augustus Saint-Gaudens submitted this vision of Lady Liberty to the United States Mint for use on the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin. The largest denomination of gold currency issued by the US, the Double Eagle would bear this design from 1907 to 1933 when all gold coining in the US ended amidst the ravages of the Great Depression.

Lady Liberty shines on the obverse of this 2009 Gold Double Eagle Coin. Her figure is set in front-facing relief as she strides toward you with a torch held aloft in her right hand and an olive branch held out in her left. The field includes a ring of 50 stars around Liberty. There are sun rays on the horizon and the U.S. Capitol Building is visible at her feet.

The American bald eagle soars through the sky in the reverse design of the 2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle. This design was also created by Saint-Gaudens and captures the eagle in left-profile relief as it flies over the rising sun with its wings flexed.
