In the stirring design of the 100 Florida Goldback Gold Notes, the American era of Florida’s history shines through in a detailed design element. The dominating figure is that of Liberty in the foreground as she grabs a broken chain to haul a ship back to shore. Look closely though, and you’ll notice design elements honoring Florida’s role in the American space program, with a rocket launching into the sky overhead and an astronaut’s footprint in the sand at Liberty’s feet.

Florida’s space program transformed the state’s identity and economy, particularly after NASA established its Launch Operations Center (later renamed Kennedy Space Center) at Cape Canaveral in 1962. The location was strategically chosen for its proximity to the equator, which provides an extra boost to launching spacecraft, and its position on the eastern coast, allowing rockets to launch over the ocean rather than populated areas. The Space Coast, as it came to be known, played a pivotal role in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, with the latter culminating in the historic moon landings.
