Japanese torpedoes struck the ship, sinking it in the Indian Ocean and claiming numerous lives. Along with the loss of passengers, 2,364 silver bars were sent to the depths. In 2017, a controversial recovery effort brought 60 tons of this shipwrecked silver back to the surface, sparking debates about the salvage operation. Right now, 1 Kilo S.S. For collectors and investors seeking a piece of maritime history, the SS Tilawa Shipwreck Salvage Silver Series is a rare find. The SS Tilawa, operated by the British India Steam Navigation Company, was tragically torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on November 23, 1942, in the Indian Ocean, carrying 60 tons of silver bullion. Rediscovered in 2014 and salvaged in 2017, the silver from this wreck is now featured in a collection that includes both original bars from the wreckage and newly minted grain, rounds, and bars, each honoring the ship’s final voyage and its underwater retrieval.
An emblem honoring the S.S. Tilawa is on the obverse of the S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bars. This design includes a circular seal at the center with a silhouette of the S.S Tilawa. The design includes stylized waters beneath the vessel and anchors on either side. The background field includes a textured wave pattern.
The S.S. Tilawa is depicted in the reverse design 1 Kilo S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bars. This design features a rippled-water effect in the background with the image of the S.S. Tilawa sailing in the foreground. The name of the ship and date of its sinking are featured on this side of the bar.
