The American Gold Buffalo features the images James Earle Fraser created in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel. Fraser, an American sculptor of the early 20th century, is renowned for designing the Buffalo Nickel, one of America’s most iconic coins, which circulated from 1913 to 1938. His design featured a Native American profile on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse, creating a distinctly American aesthetic that departed from classical European motifs common in earlier U.S. coinage.

The obverse of the 2025 American Gold Buffalo Coin comes with a depiction of an indigenous figure. This right-profile relief marked one of the first appearances of indigenous people or culture on American currency. Fraser created this effigy by combining the physical features of three different indigenous tribal leaders from early 20th-century America.

On the reverse of 2025 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coins, you’ll find an American bison standing on a mound of dirt in left-profile relief. Fraser used Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City, as inspiration for his bison design on the reverse of the coins.
