This stirring, modern depiction of Lady Liberty joins a long history of Liberty designs from the United States Mint. The iconic Liberty design has been a cornerstone of American coinage since the nation’s founding, evolving significantly over time while maintaining its symbolic importance. The earliest Liberty designs featured profile portraits influenced by classical Greek and Roman imagery, with the first Chief Engraver Robert Scot creating the Flowing Hair Liberty in 1793. Throughout the 19th century, Liberty took on increasingly Americanized features, notably in Christian Gobrecht’s Seated Liberty design and James B. Longacre’s Indian Head motif, which daringly portrayed Liberty wearing a Native American headdress. This modern Liberty effigy captures the ethnic and cultural diversity that makes America great.
