Description

1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS66+

The Morgan Silver Dollar was the last US silver dollar to see widespread circulation over several decades. Morgan Dollars with the Carson City Mint’s CC mint mark are highly sought-after, and this particular 1884-CC Morgan Dollar is one that originated from Treasury hoards not found until the 1960s. Additionally, from the original 1.136 million coins struck at Carson City in 1884, just 448 coins hit this MS66 level, and only another 210 earned any higher grade. Right now, 1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollars are available in Mint State 66 condition.

This 1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is in Mint State 66+ condition. Coins at this grade typically exhibit above average surface luster with three to four minor detracting marks or flaws, one or two of which may be in the primary focal field. No hairlines are visible on the coin without magnification.

Carson City Mint Morgan Dollars are sought by collectors for a variety of reasons. Compared to those issued by Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Denver, Carson City Morgans were struck at far lower mintage levels. Additionally, production only occured from 1878 to 1885 and 1889 to 1893. Finally, most Morgan Dollars ended up sitting in Treasury vaults for decades as backing for silver certificates and other notes, only having been discovered en masse in the 1960s.

The obverse of the 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Coin features a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design from George T. Morgan shows Liberty in left-profile relief with 13 stars and the year of issue included in the field. Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown.

On the reverse of 1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollars, you will find a unique version of the heraldic eagle. This design from Morgan shows the bald eagle without the US national shield as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
