Description

1924 Standing Liberty Quarter PCGS MS65 FH

Hermon Atkins MacNeil’s Standing Liberty design for the US Quarter is one of the more unique and contentious designs in American coinage history. This 1924 Standing Liberty Quarter is a stunning example of the detailed execution of MacNeil’s design, including the extensive modifications made to the image in 1917. While 10.92 million Standing Liberty Quarters were issued in 1924, only 112 have achieved an MS65 grade with the PCGS, and just 106 examples have earned a higher grade. Now, the 1924 Standing Liberty Quarter with a Full Head designation is available online.

This 1924 Standing Liberty Quarter is available in Mint State 65 condition with the Full Head (FH) designation. The typical MS65 coin has light, scattered contact marks with no major detracting flaws in the primary focal fields. A few scattered hairlines are possible. This particular coin showcases well-defined rivets on Liberty’s shield and an attractive luster. The FH designation from the PCGS indicates a Standing Liberty quarter with exceptionally sharp, detailed visuals for Liberty’s head, including her hair and helmet.

Obverse designs on this 1924 Standing Liberty Quarter include the famous Standing Liberty visual. Designed in 1916, Liberty’s figure is shown standing between the gap in a wall, a symbol of her defense of America. She is shown looking to the right toward the war in Europe with her shield on that side as well, while clutching an olive branch in her right hand (viewer’s left). This Type II design was modified in 1917 and featured through this 1924 release, with additional modifications made in 1925.

Reverse visuals on 1924 Standing Liberty Quarters showcase an American bald eagle in flight. This is also a Type II design, though interestingly, it is the third iteration of the reverse design. The bald eagle is shown in right-profile relief with wings extended above its frame as it glides through the air in flight.

MacNeil’s original 1916 designs for the Standing Liberty quarter were extensively modified in 1917, with additional modifications to the obverse in 1925. His original design depicted a bare-chested Liberty, but it was altered in early 1917 to include chain mail on her chest. The reverse was likewise altered in 1917 to declutter the appearance of the field. The bald eagle was shrunk in scale, and the 13 stars were spread out to place five on either side of the eagle and three beneath.
