Buffalo Nickels made their debut in 1913 during the presidency of William Howard Taft. Created by James Earle Fraser, an artist raised in the American Midwest, the designs on the coin reflect the untamed character of the American West and the enduring presence of the indigenous cultures that lived across the region for centuries. Struck before the onset of World War I, these coins continued to be produced through the Roaring Twenties and persisted even into the challenging years of the Great Depression.

This 1936-P Proof Buffalo Nickel Coin comes in PR68 condition. The average PR68 coin features a beautiful, sharp design strike with full, original luster. A maximum of four light, scattered contact marks are possible with no flaws in the primary focal areas and no visible hairlines. This coin has a satin finish, distinguishing it among 1936 Proof Buffalo Nickels, as the US Mint issued both satin and brilliant finishes on its 1936 proofs.

The obverse of the 1936-P Buffalo Nickel showcases Fraser’s well-known depiction of an indigenous tribal figure. Presented in right-profile relief, the figure features braided hair with two feathers woven into the braid. Fraser drew inspiration for this composite portrait from three different indigenous leaders of his time.

On the reverse side of the 1936-P Buffalo Nickel, an American bison is shown in left-profile relief, standing atop a mound of dirt and earth. The creature known as Black Diamond, a bison once housed at the Central Park Zoo in New York City, is widely believed to have inspired Fraser’s design for this powerful image.
