Description
1939-D Washington Quarter PCGS MS67+
Introduced in 1932, the Washington Quarter is one of the longest-running designs in American history. This 1939-D Washington Quarter is a beautiful example of quality design and minting within this series. With a final mintage of 7,092,000 coins in 1939, only 30 surviving specimens have achieved an MS67+ grade, with only three coins graded higher. The 1939-D Quarter showcases impressive beauty and is representative of the scarcity of higher-graded mint state specimens. Right now, 1939-D Washington Quarters in MS67+ condition are available.

This 1939-D Washington Quarter is in Mint State 67+ condition, making it among the highest-quality MS67 specimens. The typical MS67 coin exhibits original luster with three or four minuscule contact marks, including one or two that may be in the primary focal fields. No hairlines are visible without magnification. With this particular specimen, you’ll notice a sharp, frost-like luster and a striking visual appeal to the eye.
John Flanagan’s Washington Quarter design debuted in 1932, replacing the Standing Liberty Quarter that was canceled in 1930. Flanagan’s combined depictions of Washington on the obverse and the bald eagle on the reverse remained unchanged on the coin until 1998 when the State Quarters Series saw the bald eagle removed from the reverse. To this day, Washington’s bust remains on the obverse of the quarter (though redesigned in 2022), making the 1st President of the United States the most consistent figure to appear on American currency.
The obverse of the 1939-D Washington Quarter features Flanagan’s original bust of President George Washington. This left-profile bust is often celebrated for its simple elegance and historical significance, with President Washington becoming just the second American President to feature on American coinage behind President Lincoln’s appearance on the penny in 1909.
On the reverse of 1939-D Washington Quarters is Flanagan’s depiction of the American bald eagle. Similar in concept to the heraldic eagle, his design shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief as it looks to the right (viewer’s left). It is perched on a sheaf of arrows with an olive branch beneath.
