The obverse of this first Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin features the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II. This particular version of the Queen reflects Her Majesty at 39 years old. Various age-appropriate versions of Queen Elizabeth II have been on the obverse of all Canadian coinage since 1952 when she ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom.

The reverse of this first Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin features the Maple Leaf designed by master engraver Walter Ott. Ott created this design for the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979, to be used for all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins. The Maple Leaf is the unofficial emblem of Canada, and is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians.

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins have been issued annually since 1979 by the RCM. From 1979-1982, it was minted in only the 1 oz denomination, with a face value of $50 Canadian Dollars. In November 1982, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz denominations were added to the offering. In 1986, 1/2 oz denomination was added, and in 1993, 1/20 oz denomination was added. The Gold Maple Leaf is considered legal tender. They are regarded as the standard by which other 24-karat gold bullion coins are judged because of the consistency of their design and mintage.

The Royal Canadian Mint was originally founded in Ottawa in 1908. To boost production capacity, a second facility was opened in Winnipeg in the 1980s. The RCM is the official sovereign mint of Canada. It produces all of Canada’s circulation coins as well as manufactures the circulation coins of other nations.
