These 1986 1/2 oz American Gold Eagles are truly unique because they come from the first year of minting. Congress authorized the American Gold Eagle coin series in 1985 when the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 was created and passed through congress. Unlike the American Silver Eagle Series, the American Gold Eagle is struck in four weights: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz with denominations of $50, $25, $10 and $5 respectively.
When the NGC issues a coin a grade of MS69, it means that it has no more than two blemishes with a sharp, attractive appearance on its surface. For a coin that it is almost 30 years old, it is a remarkable achievement for this 1986 American Gold Eagle.
