Description

1989 1 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin

The Austrian Philharmonic coin is known as Europe’s best-selling gold bullion investment coin. Carrying a design that celebrates an iconic part of Austria’s national identity and cultural legacy, these coins are also known on European markets as “Vienna Philharmonics” due to their paying tribute to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, a byword in excellence in European classical music since it was founded in 1842. With unlimited mintages that have supported reliable and consistently available, these coins feature a forgery-proof design and are produced using responsibly sourced gold and an environmentally-friendly minting process. The release that started it all is the 1989 1 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin.

Coin Highlights:

  • Delivered in a protective plastic flip!
  • First release in the series, struck in 1989 by the Austrian Mint!
  • Final mintage of 351,000 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 Pure Gold.
  • Carries a face value of 2000 Schilling backed by the Austrian Republic.
  • The coin’s obverse features the Orchestra’s famed pipe organ.
  • The reverse shows a grouping of orchestral instruments.

The popularity of the Austrian Philharmonic gold coin was fast-growing after its first release in 1989: just a year later, the series was the best-selling in Europe and the second best-selling in the world. In the years since, millions of these remarkable gold coins comprising hundreds of tons of gold have been sold all over the world. Today the series provides the only gold coins in Europe with a face value in Euro, but originally the coins carried a face value in Schilling, as seen on the first such coins to be struck.

The 1989 Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin ships fully insured by the team at JM Bullion in a plastic flip. The Oesterreichische Nationalbank, of which the Austrian Mint is a division, backs the coin’s face value, which is also certified by the LBMA and the OECD.

The coin’s obverse side features the famous pipe organ as seen at the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s famous New Year concerts. This is accompanied by the inscription “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH,” “1 UNZE GOLD 999.9,” “1989” and “2000 SCHILLING.”

The reverse side shows eight of the instruments that play key roles in the Orchestra’s music: four violins appear on either side of a cello in the foreground, and a Viennese horn, a bassoon, and a harp appear just above and behind them. The lettering “WIENER PHILHARMONIKER” completes the design.
