When the United States Mint first launched the American Eagle Coin program in 1986, the initial launch didn’t feature a wide range of options. However, in subsequent years, the mint added in others to make more options for collectors and investors of all budgets. Now, American Gold Eagles can be found in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights.

The United States Mint also releases American Eagle Coins in numerous finishes, including bullion, uncirculated, and proof. In addition, the coins also come in four different metal types: silver, gold, platinum, and palladium. The designs differ on each metal type, but the themes all remain the same.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty design graces the obverse face of the American Gold Eagle Coins. In the design that was originally created for Gold Double Eagle Coins in 1907, Lady Liberty can be seen walking forward, seemingly off the face of the coin. In the image, she is carrying an olive branch and a flaming torch.

On the reverse, sculptor Miley Busiek’s image of a male bald eagle returning to a nest where his mate and hatchling await him. The male carries an olive branch between his talons. This image was created specifically for use on these coins in 1986.

These coins will arrive to your home in clear plastic flips. These flips are meant to protect the coins during the shipping process, and they are also very useful in protecting coins when they are in storage or on display.

The American Gold Eagle Coins contain 91.67% gold by weight. This means the 1/2 oz versions contain exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold. The rest of the coin is comprised of copper and silver, making the coins more durable.
