The introduction of the Gold Buffalo Series in 2006 followed an established path for American bullion coins. The American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle established a pattern for the US Mint using historic images of Liberty from American currency in its modern bullion coins.
With the release of the American Gold Buffalo, the US Mint followed this pattern of using a historic US coin design. This series replicates the images of the 1913 Indian Head Nickel. The Gold Buffalo went beyond the American Eagles in using 24-karat gold content, becoming the US Mint’s only .9999 pure gold specimen.
