Since 1986, the Perth Mint has issued a gold bullion coin program on an annual basis that is now known as the Australian Gold Kangaroo. Though it debuted as the Australian Gold Nugget, the series made the change to the Gold Kangaroo in 1990 in honor of the nation’s native flora and fauna. Kangaroos are members of the marsupial family, which means they carry their young in a pouch. After birth, the tiny joey crawls into its mother’s pouch and attaches itself to a teat, where it stays for several months until it is fully developed.
