Kilauea is an active shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. The volcano is a perfect example of how the islands were formed through Earth’s moving crust and explosive eruptions. Kilauea is located along the southern coast of the island of Hawaii and became an active volcano between 300,000 and 600,000 years ago, breaking the water line at sea level around 100,000 years ago.

As a perfect example of Kilauea’s activity, the volcano erupted into action on May 17, 2018, and was actively erupting for weeks and months following the May 17th active start date. Its eruption is estimated to have added 700 acres of land to the Big Island in the first two months of its eruptions in 2018.

On the reverse of 2012-P 5 oz Burnished ATB Hawaii Volcanoes Silver Coins is the image of Kilauea as it erupts with molten lava. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was established as a US National Park in August 1916 and actually includes two prominent volcanoes. Kilauea is known as one of the most active volcanoes in the world, while its larger neighbor Mauna Loa is the world’s largest shield volcano.

The obverse of 2012 Burnished ATB Hawaii Volcanoes Silver Coins includes the image of President George Washington. The image of Washington found here comes from the circulation US quarter and has been there since 1932 when it was added to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth.

These 2012-P 5 oz Burnished ATB Hawaii Volcanoes Silver Coins arrive inside of protective boxes from the United States Mint and includes a Certificate of Authenticity. Burnished ATB Silver Coins include a “P” mint mark from the Philadelphia Mint.
