Each 2015 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coin offered here is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and arrives in protective plastic. The Platinum Platypus Series was introduced in 2011 and issued through 2018, with the highest mintage occurring in the debut year. The 2011 coin had a maximum mintage of 30,000 coins and sold out that figure.
The platypus, found in eastern Australian waterways, is one of nature’s most peculiar mammals. These egg-laying monotremes combine features of several animals, sporting a duck-like bill, beaver-like tail, and otter-like feet. Their bills contain thousands of electroreceptors that detect the electrical signals produced by prey, making them highly efficient hunters in murky waters.
The obverse of 2015 Australian Platinum Platypus Coins comes with a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this was the fourth-generation effigy of Her Majesty to feature on coins across the Commonwealth.
On the reverse of 2015 1 oz Platinum Platypus Coins, you’ll find the image of a platypus swimming beneath the waves. This design was used each year in the series. These semi-aquatic mammals require healthy river systems with stable banks for burrowing and sufficient water levels to support their prey of insects, worms, and freshwater crustaceans.
