Having been utilized in a variety of ways for multiple centuries by both aboriginal Canadians, as well as the country’s first European settlers, the maple tree and its leaves remain incredibly important in Canada. As such, the 2016 ½ oz Gold Maple Leaf continues the long-standing tradition of celebrating Canada’s most popular national symbol.

The Gold Maple Leaf coin was first released in the late 1970s, but it wasn’t until the mid-1980s when the coin was offered in the ½ oz variety. The coin is always marked with a large maple leaf, but the specifics of this symbol change slightly with each new release. When it comes to the 2016 ½ oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, the reverse side depicts an extremely detailed maple leaf. The detail of the imagery extends beyond what you can see too, as the coin’s central maple leaf image is raised from the face to give it more of a textured feel. Surrounding the maple leaf are weight and purity indications.
The obverse side of the coin, as is typical of Canadian coins, features the right-facing profile image of Queen Elizabeth II. The longstanding Queen is depicted wearing a beautiful pearl necklace that can be felt when you run your hands over the surface of the coin. Beneath the image of the Queen is the CAD$25 face value.
