Britannia is an ancient term used for multiple purposes in the course of European history. When the Roman Empire moved to conquer the British Isles, the soldiers originally referred to the province as Britannia. Over time, the term came to be used in reference to the native inhabitants of the Isles, as well.
Later on in British history, Britannia took on a role as a goddess whose job was to guard the British Isles from invasion. Britannia was first used on United Kingdom coins in the early 1700s as one of the first sovereign coins of the nation. Today it is featured on the British Gold Britannia’s reverse side.
The reverse of the 2016 1 oz British Gold Britannia includes the image of Britannia as the goddess guarding Britain. She stands along the south coast of England with her trident in hand, and a shield bearing the Union Jack as she protects the region.
On the obverse side of the coin is the newest image of Queen Elizabeth II to grace British coins. Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 image has been replaced with Jody Clark’s 2015 right-profile portrait of the Queen, more accurately reflecting her current age and status in life.
Each of the 2016 1 oz British Gold Britannia coins from the Royal Mint in this product listing is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, which means there are no signs of wear and tear. You may, however, notice breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
