Burnished American Gold Eagles were introduced in 2006 as part of the 20th anniversary of the American Eagle bullion series. The coins were initially available in the same four weights found in the BU and Proof versions of the coin, but as of 2011, the collection features only a 1 oz gold coin.
In the obverse design of the 2016-W Burnished American Gold Eagle Coin, the mint features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Lady Liberty. This front-facing relief of Liberty includes a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. She walks toward the viewer with rays of sunshine on the horizon, the U.S. Capitol Building at her feet, and a ring of stars around the field.
For the reverse of 2016-W 1 oz Burnished Gold Eagles, the design field features Miley Busiek’s depiction of a family of bald eagles. In this design, the male eagle soars over the nest with a large branch in its talons as the female eagle guards hatchlings in the nest.
