Description

2017 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coin (BU)

The Perth Mint is no stranger to the release of impressive bullion coins, especially those featuring images of native species from the Land Down Under. The Australian continent is home to some of the world’s most unique animal species, such as marsupials including the koala and kangaroo. Right now, the 2017 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coin is available.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic capsule, sealed roll of 20, or box of 100.
  • Limited mintages available!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum in BU condition.
  • Bears a face value of $100 (AUD) backed by the federal government of Australia.
  • Obverse includes the image of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Reverse features the Platypus as it swims in the water.

Australia was the first major, industrialized nation in the world to announce the annual production of 1 oz. platinum coins for sale to investors. The striking of platinum coins was approved on June 18, 1987.

The Australian Platinum Platypus is the leading 1 oz platinum coin from the Perth Mint, and unlike some other products from the mint it features the same platypus design each year. Also known as the duck-billed platypus, this species is an egg-laying mammal that is endemic to eastern Australia and the region of Tasmania.

Like the beaver in North America, the platypus was once intensely hunted for the fur of its hide, but in the 20th century the species is protected throughout its range against hunting and poaching. The platypus also happens to be one of the few venomous mammals in the world, with males possessing a spur on their hind foot that delivers a painful (though not deadly) venom.

Each 2017 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coin in this product listing is in BU condition. Coins in this condition exhibit no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice a range of minor flaws including breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks from the coining process.

On the reverse of the Australian Platinum Platypus is the image of the venomous mammal as it swims in the water. Engravings on this face of the coin are limited to name of the coin issue, as well as its year of issue, weight, purity, and metal content.

The obverse of the 2017 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coin includes the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The current image in use on Australian coinage is the fourth-generation depiction created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.

Located in Perth, Western Australia, the Perth Mint is a state-owned entity of the local government and was originally part of the Royal Mint system. Opened in 1899, it is the oldest operating facility in the country.
