Description

2017 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin (BU)

One of the longest running precious metal bullion coin programs is the Gold Libertad from the Mexican Mint. Introduced in 1 oz gold in 1981, at that point in history only the South African Gold Krugerrand and Canadian Gold Maple Leaf were available to purchase. Today, 2017 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available to you online.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip.
  • 22nd year of issue for the 1 oz Gold Libertad!
  • No established face value.
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure gold in BU condition.
  • Obverse features Winged Liberty from the Mexican Independence Victory Column.
  • Reverse bears the modern coat of arms and the historic versions of that design.

While other gold bullion coins are offered every year, the Mexican Gold Libertad has followed a different path. The Mexican Gold Libertad was first offered in the 1 oz weight in 1981, but wouldn’t be offered again until 1991 when two additional fractional-weight coins were added. From that point forward, the coins were available from 1991 to 1994, in 2000, and continuously since 2002.

The Gold Libertad is the direct successor to the Mexican Mint’s gold Centenario coin. That product was introduced in 1921 by the mint to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mexican independence and featured the famed image of Winged Victory on its obverse. That was revived for use on the Libertad in 1981 after the former coin program ended primary coining in 1947.

All 2017 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins listed here are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition have no signs of wear and tear, but you may notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the production process at the mint.

On the obverse of Mexican Gold Libertad coins is the primary design of Winged Victory. The Goddess of Victory, as she was known in Greek mythology, stands 22 feet tall atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City, and she appears on the Gold Libertad each year. In the background are twin volcanic peaks known as Izztacihuatl and Popocatepetl.

The reverse of the 2017 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad coins features the Mexican coat of arms. On the 1 oz gold coin you’ll find the modern coat of arms for Mexico in the center, and it is surrounded along the edges by 10 historic versions of the design.

The Mexican Mint was established in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors. The original goal was to refine gold and silver from Central America for easier shipment back to the European capital of the Spanish empire, but over time the mint also struck coinage for Spanish colonial assets throughout the New World.
