The introduction of the American Gold Eagle in 1986 marked the return of gold coining in the United States and was the purest gold coin issued by the US since 1834. From 1834 to 1933, the US Mint issued gold coins with 90% gold content. From 1933 to 1985, no gold coins were struck by the mint for circulation or investment. The modern Gold Eagles have 91.67% gold with a balance of 5.33% copper and 3% silver.
Obverse design elements on the 2025 American Gold Eagle feature the historic Lady Liberty image from the 1907 $20 Gold Double Eagle. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it shows Liberty in front-facing relief walking away from the U.S. Capitol with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. There are sunrays and a ring of stars behind her figure.
Reverse visuals on 2025 1/4 oz Gold Eagle Coins depict the American bald eagle in a naturalistic portrait. The head of the eagle is set in left-profile relief and boasts incredible levels of detail. This design debuted in July 2021 and replaced Miley Busiek’s original 1986 reverse design. Created by Jennie Norris, this represents the first major design change in the program’s history.
