The American Gold Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint in 1986. The official gold bullion coins of the United States of America, the debut of the Gold Eagle marked the end of a 53–year hiatus in gold coin production in the United States that dated back to the Great Depression. The coins in the American Eagle Series feature an effigy of Liberty on the obverse, but the coins bear the name of the eagle for the depictions of the American bald eagle that grace the reverse. The initial selection of the bald eagle as the national emblem for America wasn’t without controversy—Benjamin Franklin famously preferred the wild turkey, arguing that the eagle was a bird of “bad moral character” due to its scavenging habits. Nevertheless, the bald eagle’s commanding presence and soaring flight perfectly captured the spirit of American independence.

Mint State 69 coins have full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor flaws possible. These flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines. On the obverse of the 2025 American Gold Eagles, you’ll find Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this visual shows Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
