As British forces advanced during the Second Boer War, the elderly Kruger left the Transvaal in 1900, traveling by train to Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in Portuguese East Africa, from where he sailed to Europe seeking international support for the Boer cause. He spent his final years in exile, primarily in the Netherlands, where he was received as a hero and symbol of resistance against British imperialism, though his diplomatic efforts to secure European intervention ultimately proved unsuccessful. Kruger died in Clarens, Switzerland, in 1904 at age 78.
All 2026 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coins listed here are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and ship either individually in protective flips or by multiples of 50 coins in plastic tubes. All Krugerrands have a 22-karat gold alloy that includes 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper.
The obverse of the 2026 South African Gold Krugerrand design features Paul Kruger’s left-profile portrait, originally engraved in the 1890s and carried through every subsequent Krugerrand issue.
The reverse of 2026 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand Coins presents the Springbok antelope, a design motif that reflects South Africa’s heritage and was reintroduced with the launch of the Gold Krugerrand in 1967, maintaining its symbolic place in modern issues.
