Designed originally for the $20 Double Eagle, the image captures Liberty in full-length relief, facing forward as she steps confidently toward the viewer. Sunburst rays appear in the background, complemented by a ring of stars along the rim. In her raised right hand, Liberty carries a torch, while her left hand holds an olive branch. The U.S. Capitol Building appears behind her near the lower portion of the design.

The reverse of the 2026-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle displays a modern rendering of the American bald eagle. Updated in 2020, the design by Jennie Norris presents the eagle’s head in left-profile relief with carefully detailed features.

The half-ounce Proof American Gold Eagle debuted in 1987, following closely after its larger counterpart and containing precisely one-half troy ounce of 22-karat gold.
