Oklahoma Goldbacks join a growing collection of Goldback designs from states across the country. The series started in Utah as a result of a state-level law that opened the door for the use of gold as a form of voluntary local currency. Since then, Wyoming, Nevada, South Dakota, New Hampshire, and Florida have all seen design collections issued in the Goldbacks Series.
The designs of the individual notes showcase the rich history of Oklahoma through various visuals. Long before European contact, Oklahoma was inhabited by numerous Native American tribes, including the Osage, Quapaw, and Wichita peoples who established complex societies across the region’s diverse landscapes of plains, forests, and rivers. The discovery of oil in the early 1900s transformed the territory into a booming frontier economy.
