Queen Elizabeth II or King Charles III features on the obverse of these 1/2 oz Gold Britannia. All coins dated 1987 to 2023 feature Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Three different portraits of the Queen graced the coins, including portraits by Raphael Maklouf (1987), Ian Rank-Broadley (1998-2015), and Jody Clark (2016-2023). In mid-2023, the first-ever Gold Britannis with King Charles III’s portrait from Martin Jennings debuted on the coins.
Britannia is on the reverse of all coins in the 1/2 oz British Gold Britannia Series. Designed in 1987 by Philip Nathan, this front-facing bust shows Britannia’s full-length figure looking to her right as she clutches a trident and wears a Corinthian helmet. In her left hand, she holds an olive branch as it rests on the Union Jack shield.
