5 Peso Uruguay Gold Coins were struck by the French Mint in Paris in 1930 for Uruguay to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the nation’s adoption of its constitution. Based upon the US Constitution, the date is held in high regard by all in Uruguay. Just 14,415 coins were initially released in 1930, with an additional 80,000 coins reportedly released in the 1990s by the Argentine central bank.
On the obverse of the coins is a right-profile bust of Jose Gervasio Artigas. Artigas was an army general in Uruguay in the 19th century is widely regarded as the father of Uruguayan independence.
