Buffalo Nickels were issued by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938, with millions of coins struck each year. However, coins with exceptional condition attract collectors seeking specimens with beautiful visual appeal. This 1936 Buffalo Nickel is certified Mint State 67+ by the Professional Coin Grading Service. One of the best examples of an MS67 coin, this specimen has exceptional eye appeal with near-full luster. Three or four minuscule contact marks are possible, with one or two possible in the primary focal fields. No hairlines are visible to the naked eye. This particular 1936 Buffalo Nickel has lustrous surface visuals and a strong design strike.
The Buffalo Nickel’s significance extends beyond its artistic merit to its cultural and symbolic importance in American numismatics. It was one of the first US coins to celebrate indigenous American subjects rather than classical or allegorical figures, marking a shift toward distinctly American themes in coinage design.
An indigenous figure is on the obverse of the 1936 Buffalo Nickel. Fraser drew inspiration for his right-profile portrait from three real-life indigenous figures in early 20th-century America. In 1931, Fraser cited Iron Tail and Two Moons as inspiration for his design, though he later admitted (1938) that Big Tree was also an inspiration for the portrait.
The bison featured on the reverse of the 1936 Buffalo Nickel Coin was modeled after “Black Diamond,” a resident of the Central Park Zoo, symbolizing the American West and the wildlife that had largely disappeared by the time of the coin’s creation.
