The reverse side of the 2025 American Gold Eagle showcases Jennie Norris’ 2020 design of a detailed, left-facing bald eagle, capturing the essence of strength and freedom. This image of the bald eagle replaced the original 1986 design from Miley Busiek.
Although the eagle became America’s national symbol following the American Revolution, the decision was not without debate—Benjamin Franklin famously suggested the wild turkey as a more suitable emblem, criticizing the eagle for its scavenger behavior. Regardless, the bald eagle’s regal appearance and graceful flight came to symbolize the nation’s independence and strength.
