Now known as the Australian Gold Kangaroo, this series was introduced in 1986 and struck through 1989 as the Gold Nugget with different reverse designs offered on the varying weights in the series. On the obverse of 1 oz Australian Gold Nugget coins is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. All three issue years of the Australian Gold Nugget feature Raphael Maklouf’s third-generation British portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. A design that many viewed as an idealized vision of the Queen, this right-profile portrait captures Elizabeth II wearing the Royal Diadem crown with earrings and necklace included among her jewelry.
