Designed by Hermon Atkins MacNeil, the Standing Liberty Quarter was controversial in its initial Type I obverse release for depicting Liberty in a robe with a bare chest. The design was modified to its Type II iteration in 1917 with the inclusion of chain mail over Liberty’s chest. In 1925, the obverse was again modified with stronger strikes on the date mark for Type III coins. Type II specimens were known to have date marks that quickly wore down in circulation.
This 1927-S Standing Liberty Quarter is a beautiful MS65 specimen. On both sides, the coin showcases a radiant cartwheel luster pattern with frosted, silver brilliance throughout and a champagne-gold toning that runs around the edges of the field. The design elements showcase a crisp strike that helps create visual separation between the devices and the background field.
Lady Liberty is found on the obverse of 1927-S Standing Liberty Quarters. This design is the Type III issue in the series, with the inclusion of chain mail on Liberty’s chest, a shield with the US national emblem in her left hand, and an olive branch in her right. MacNeil’s symbolism in the Liberty design was seen as a warning as World War I raged in Europe in 1916. Liberty looks toward the east with her shield at the ready, symbolizing America’s preparedness for war, while her right hand clutches an olive branch, an indication that the nation prefers peace.
An American bald eagle is found on the reverse of 1927-S Standing Liberty Quarter Coins. Also designed by MacNeil, this is the Type II image featured on the reverse of the coins. The eagle is shown gliding through the air in flight with the nation of issue above, the denomination below, and 13 stars in total. The original Type I split the 13 stars on either side of the eagle, with seven to the left and six to the right. These Type II coins feature five stars on either side of the eagle, with three stars immediately below the bird.
