This 1939-S Arkansas Half Dollar is in Mint State 67 condition. Typical MS67 coins showcase original mint luster with three of four minuscule contact marks, one or two of which may be in the primary focal fields. This particular coin showcases a unique frost to its luster.

Lady Liberty features on the obverse in a dual portrait design for the 1939-S Arkansas Half Dollar. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief in the foreground wearing a Phrygian cap. In the background, an indigenous chieftain is depicted in left-profile relief. The coins include dual date marks as well, with the year of issue and the 1836 date of statehood for Arkansas.

The Arkansas state flag is featured on the reverse of 1939-S Arkansas Half Dollar Coins. Edward Burr was the designer behind both the obverse and reverse of the Arkansas Half Dollar. The coins were issued by the mint from 1935 to 1939.

The design of the Arkansas Half Dollar Coin celebrates the history of the state. The use of Liberty and the indigenous chieftain celebrates the meeting of different cultures in America’s heartland. When these coins were initially issued, amidst the Great Depression, there were financial controversies regarding the release of commemorative issues. Despite those concerns, the series remains popular with modern collectors.
