At this point in the history of the series, the 1984 coin was just the third release date to feature a mintage above 1 million coins. After three years of lower mintages in the early 1980s, demand for the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf briefly rebounded in the mid-1980s. Mintages from 1984 to 1986 remained above 1 million annually and would be the last dates to offer a mintage so high until 2009.
In 1984, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was in the midst of a period of growth. In November 1982, the original 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf had been enhanced with the increase in gold fineness from .999 to .9999 pure gold. Additionally, the first fractional-ounce weights were introduced in November 1982, expanding the series for the first time.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 1984 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins. This right-profile portrait of the Queen is the original design to feature on Canadian Maple Leaf Coins. It was designed in 1964 by Arnold Machin and used broadly on Canadian coins from 1965 to 1989. It depicts the Queen at the age of 34 with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
A sugar maple leaf is depicted in the reverse design of the 1984 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf. This design was created by Walter Ott in 1979 and captures a beautiful, natural look at the sugar maple leaf.
