The US Mint first introduced the American Gold Eagle coin in October of 1986. While the gold bullion collection, which remains the Mint’s highest-selling collection of all time, was available for separate purchase in four different sizes, you can now acquire all four of them in a gorgeous box collection. You will be excited to find out that the 1 oz coin is marked with the W Mint Mark from the West Point Mint Mark while the other three coins were forged by the Philadelphia Mint. These include 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz!
For the obverse field of the 1992 4-Coin Proof American Gold Eagle Set, all of the coins feature the image of Lady Liberty. This design was curated by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. He had been commissioned by President Roosevelt to forge a new design for American gold coinage. He ended up coming up with the depiction of Liberty striding confidently forward into an unknown future with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The torch represents a beacon of hope and guidance while the olive branch is America’s offering of peace and friendship with others.
For the reverse field of the 1992 4-Coin Proof American Gold Eagle Set, all of the coins are engraved with the family of American bald eagles. They are featured in their nest while the female bald eagle keeps an eye on her young hatchlings. Overhead, her male counterpart guards all of them fiercely. This iconic depiction of American Eagles was forged in 1986 by Miley Busiek.
