Back in 1986, the United States Mint debuted the American Eagle Coin program. When the program initially launched, the mint provided only a limited selection of gold sizes. Today, you can purchase a 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, or 1/10 oz gold version. The other sizes were added to the lineup at various times during later years.

The mint also offers American Eagle Coins in bullion, uncirculated, and proof conditions. Plus, there are four different versions of these coins in different metals—all with different designs in the same theme as the gold versions. In addition to gold, these coins also come in silver, palladium, and platinum.

On the obverse face, these coins feature the image of Lady Liberty walking away from the Capitol building in Washington D.C. The image shows Lady Liberty carrying a flaming torch and an olive branch. This depiction of Lady Liberty was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The original design was created for the Gold Double Eagle Coins that were released in 1907.

Sculptor Miley Busiek created the image of a bald eagle family that is found on the reverse faces of these coins. In the image, a large male eagle is seen returning to his family nest with an olive branch in his talons. A female and hatchling are waiting for his return in the nest. This design was created exclusively for use on American Gold Eagle Coins.

We ship these coins in plastic flips for their protection. The flips are also great for storage, as they keep dust and other debris off of the coins’ surfaces. Each coin contains 91.67% gold by weight, which means they contain exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold. The composition of the coins also includes copper and silver, which makes the coins more durable.
