In 1986, the United States Mint introduced the first American Gold Eagle Coins. This debut included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins in a BU version and a single 1 oz gold option. Additional fractional-ounce Proof Gold Eagles were added in 1987 and 1988.
All of the coins in the American Gold Eagle Series are 22-karat gold specimens. The United States Mint uses a metallic alloy of gold, copper, and silver for its 22-karat gold coins. This composition works out to 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.
Lady Liberty features on the obverse side of 2002-W 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle Coins. This historic effigy of Liberty found on this side was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was first used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin. This front-facing portrait was the last Liberty design on those historic US gold coins.
A family of bald eagles is featured in the reverse design of 2002-W Proof American Gold Eagle Coins. This image was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek and depicts a male eagle soaring over the nest as a female guards hatchlings within the nest.
These 2002-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins arrive in capsules within a US Mint display box. Each coin comes with a Certificate of Authenticity as well. Proof coins have frosted designs and mirrored fields.
