Martin Van Buren was born on December 5, 1782, in Kinderhook, New York. He was of Dutch descent, making him the first president with non-English ancestry, as his first language was Dutch. For the obverse design representing his presidency, Seated Liberty graces the coins.
The obverse of the 2008-W 1/2 oz First Spouse Van Buren’s Liberty Gold Coin features the historic Seated Liberty design. The Seated Liberty design was created in 1836 and featured on a variety of silver denominations of US currency. US Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht developed the design of Liberty seated on a rock with a staff and Phrygian cap in her left hand and the US national shield resting at her side beneath her right hand.
