The reverse field of the 2011-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coin features the unique image of a bison. The bison is portrayed in a left-facing portrait. He rams his head into the edge of the coin as if he is trying to burst out of a cage. This design was also created by James Fraser and is said to be inspired by the bison kept in a zoo that he frequented often.
