The reverse of the American Gold Eagle coin features a family of nesting bald eagles. Created in 1986 by Miley Busiek, this design is exclusive to the American Gold Eagle and includes the image of a male bald eagle flying over the nest, where a group of hatchlings is at rest under the watchful eye of a female.

All American Gold Eagle coins are products of the United States Mint, and are now produced in all weights and versions by the West Point Mint facility.
