Under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, the United States Mint and Treasury Department were authorized to produce an official gold bullion coin for the federal government. The coin series was to include a bullion and proof version, with four weights available in bullion and a 1 oz weight in proof. The series expanded to four weights in proof in 1988, with a burnished coin added in 2006.

On the reverse, a male bald eagle is depicted flying over the family nest with an olive branch in its talons. In the nest, a female stands vigilant guard over the hatchlings. Sculptor Miley Busiek created this image specifically for the American Gold Eagle series.
