Description
2021 1/4 oz Canadian Dragon Gold Coin
In Chinese culture and art, dragons are interpreted quite differently from how they appear in Western traditions. Known as lóng in Mandarin, these legendary creatures are commonly shown as elongated, snake-like beings with four legs, lacking wings, and covered in scales that draw from multiple animals. The Royal Canadian Mint honors the mystique and majesty of the Chinese dragon through its Canadian Dragon Series. Today, 2021 1/4 oz Canadian Dragon Gold Coins are available.
Coin Highlights:
- Comes with protective plastic packaging!
- 5th release in the Canadian Dragon collection!

As the controllers of rain and water, dragons were historically worshipped and respected, particularly by agricultural communities whose livelihoods depended on adequate rainfall. This connection to water made dragons symbols of abundance and prosperity, leading to their association with imperial power.
All 2021 1/4 oz Canadian Dragon Gold Coins are housed in protective plastic to ensure their condition. These coins exhibit reverse-proof qualities, emphasizing a frosted backdrop paired with a brilliant, mirror-like dragon image. The Canadian Dragon Series was produced by the Royal Canadian Mint between 2017 and 2023, with each issue featuring a new artistic interpretation of the Chinese dragon.
The obverse design of the 2021 Canadian Dragon Gold Coin features the enduring image of Queen Elizabeth II. This effigy, created in 2003 by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt, presents the Queen in right-profile relief without a crown. It stands as one of only two Canadian coin portraits crafted by a Canadian and is notable for its regal simplicity.
On the reverse side of the 2021 1/4 oz Dragon Gold Coin, you’ll see a Chinese dragon with its sinuous body coiled into the shape of a number 8. In classical artwork, Chinese dragons are often shown chasing or playing with a flaming pearl, which represents wisdom, prosperity, or the moon.
