Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins were introduced in 1979. When the collection debuted in that year it featured only a 1 oz gold coin with .999 pure gold content. From 1979 to November 1982, the series offered only this option. There would be four subsequent expansions of the series that started in November 1982.
While most expansion years for the series featured the introduction of a single new weight, November 1982 featured not only two new weights introduced into the series, but also marked the increase of gold purity in the series to .9999 24-karat gold. The coins introduced that year were the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins.
On the obverse of 2021 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins is an image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is captured here in right-profile relief in a fourth-generation design created by Susanna Blunt. The image was created in 2003 by Ms. Blunt and debuted on the Gold Maple Leaf coins in 2005. This design is the first in Queen Elizabeth II’s reign to showcase a portrait without a crown on the Queen’s head.
The reverse face of the 2021 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin includes the historic emblem of Canada. This sugar maple leaf design was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins. The coins in the modern Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series have radial lines in the background on both the obverse and reverse to offer enhanced counterfeiting security for the coins.
