The Buffalo Nickel, also known as the Indian Head Nickel, was a five-cent coin minted by the United States from 1913 to 1938. James Earle Fraser was the designer of the obverse and reverse of the coin, and his design was approved by the administration of President William Howard Taft.

Also known as the Plains Bison or buffalo, this creature was a fixture in the culture, beliefs, and daily lives of America’s indigenous tribes. Fraser also created this design and used Black Diamond, a bison at the Central Park Zoo, as inspiration for his imagery.
