The 2026 production calendar at the United States Mint includes two notable milestones for its flagship bullion coin programs. In this release year, the American Eagle Series reaches its 40th anniversary, while the American Buffalo Gold Coin marks its 20th year in production, having debuted in 2006. Introduced in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo faithfully revived the images from the 1913 Buffalo Nickel, as designed by James Earle Fraser. The debut issue in 2006 long held the highest mintage in the BU Gold Buffalo Series. The 337,012 coins sold in 2006 was not surpassed until 2021, when 350,500 coins were sold. This was then surpassed the following year, with 410,000 coins sold in 2022.
All 2026 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Tubes contain a total of 20 individual American Gold Buffalo Coins. The acrylic tube contains a total of 20 Troy ounces of 24-karat gold, with all coins in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
The obverse of the 2026 American Gold Buffalo features a right-facing profile of an indigenous figure. This artwork was originally created by James Earle Fraser for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. Rather than depicting a specific individual, Fraser drew inspiration from the facial features of three different Native American individuals from the early 1900s, combining their traits to form a composite image for the portrait.
On the reverse side of the 2026 1 oz Gold Buffalo, collectors will find a powerful depiction of an American bison shown in left-profile relief. Also designed by Fraser, this image is based on a real bison named Black Diamond, who lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York City during the early 20th century. In the artwork, the bison is shown with its head lowered, grazing atop a small rise in the landscape.
