The gold Krugerrand has been the premier global one ounce gold coin since it’s introduction in 1967. Thanks to its success the half-ounce, quarter–ounce, and tenth-ounce gold Krugerrands were introduced in 1980 and have been manufactured with the same specifications and design ever since.
The South African 1/4 oz Krugerrand is minted in a 22-carat gold copper-gold alloy making it much more resistant to scratches compared to coins minted in pure gold. Because of this the coin weighs more than a 1/4 troy ounce (8.482 grams) so that it contains exactly a 1/4 troy ounce (7.775 grams) of fine (24 carat) gold.
