Description
Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin (VF)
Issued in 1908, the $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle would be the last and most distinct version of the Half Eagle coins. It possesses a unique recessed design, which has been engraved into the coin itself, rather than sculpted unto the coin’s surface. As with other gold coins produced prior to 1933, the Indian Half Eagle possesses a purity of 90.0%. Its size of .2418 troy oz makes it the ideal option for individuals who are interested in medium-sized investments. All coins included in this particular collection have been graded with a condition of VF (Very Fine.)
Coin Highlights:
- Actual gold content of .2418 troy oz.

- Issued by the US Mint with a $5 (USD) face value.
- Features the recessed coin design of Bela Lyon Platt.
- Available in VF (Very Fine) condition.
- Individual coins ship in separate plastic sleeves.
The design of the Indian Gold Half Eagle was a complete departure from its predecessors. Unlike its earlier counterparts, that displayed portraits of Lady Liberty on their obverse, this version of the Gold Half Eagle proudly depicts the portrait of a Native American chief. He is featured in profile, attired in the traditional feathered headdress of his people. Framing this proud warrior is a border of thirteen stars divided by the word, “Liberty” and the coin’s mintage year. The intention behind Bela Lyon Platt’s artwork was to celebrate the US’s new found sense of national identity.
The Indian Gold Half Eagle would also feature significant changes to its reverse side’s artwork. Instead of the more figurative interpretation of the Heraldic Eagle, Platt chose to depict a more literal depiction of the classic emblem. His design depicts a bald eagle perched on top of the symbolic olive branch and arrows rather than clutching them in its talons. Included in the design’s revision were some adjustments to its inscription; the denomination is now completely written out without any abbreviations or numerical symbols.
