The War of 1812 stemmed from perceived violations of US national sovereignty by the United Kingdom, primarily at sea where the British Navy often commandeered US merchant vessels and pressed sailors into service in the Royal Navy. The United States of America, for the first time as an independent nation, would eventually declare war on the British.

In the design of the War of 1812 1/2 oz Platinum Bullion Coin, you’ll find symbols on the reverse which represent the three primary combatants in the conflict. The center of the design includes the shield and maple leaf of Canada, then a colony of the United Kingdom. The shield is supported on the left by the Lion of England and on the right by the American Bald Eagle.

On the reverse of the War of 1812 1/2 oz Platinum Bullion Coins, the design mentioned above takes center stage. It is accompanied by numerous engravings, including the French and English phrases “War of 1812 – Guerre de 1812” above the shield and heraldic beasts. In this fourth-generation design for Canadian coins, Susanna Blunt depicts the Queen without a crown upon her head.
