The Royal Canadian Mint commemorated the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 beginning in 2012 with a commemorative series of bullion coins. Included in that release is a 2017dated platinum version of the stunning design. The war between the United States and the United Kingdom marked the first time in American history that the young nation had declared war on another country, and is viewed through the lens of history as a second war of independence for the US. Right now, War of 1812 1/2 oz Platinum Bullion Coins are available to purchase online.

The War of 1812 stemmed from perceived violations of US national sovereignty by the United Kingdom, primarily at sea where the British Navy often commandeered US merchant vessels and pressed sailors into service in the Royal Navy. The United States of America, for the first time as an independent nation, would eventually declare war on the British.

In the design of the War of 1812 1/2 oz Platinum Bullion Coin, you’ll find symbols on the reverse which represent the three primary combatants in the conflict. The center of the design includes the shield and maple leaf of Canada, then a colony of the United Kingdom. The shield is supported on the left by the Lion of England and on the right by the American Bald Eagle.

On the reverse of the War of 1812 1/2 oz Platinum Bullion Coins, the design mentioned above takes center stage. It is accompanied by numerous engravings, including the French and English phrases “War of 1812 – Guerre de 1812” above the shield and heraldic beasts. The coin’s metal content, weight, and purity also feature on this side.

The obverse of these 1/2 oz Platinum Coins includes the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In this fourth-generation design for Canadian coins, Susanna Blunt depicts the Queen without a crown upon her head. This is the first design of a British monarch on Canadian coins without a crown since Elizabeth II’s father George VI in a design created back in 1936.
